How Can Families Spark Conversations About Money Management & Financial Planning?

Have your question answered on the Money Wisdom Question Series!

Today’s question is: How can families spark conversations about money management and financial planning? This question might be coming from a couple of different angles.

Get on the Same Page as Your Spouse

You might have a couple, a husband and wife, who ultimately are not on the same page financially or don’t feel that they have a financial plan. Step one is to start to have a conversation in regard to your goals. When do you want to retire? What type of lifestyle do you want to live in retirement?

The next step after that is to sit down and take a look at the numbers. Look at how much you are saving on a regular basis in those retirement accounts. Is one spouse pulling the weight a little bit more than the other? We need to get on the same page about these different things and start to build a plan, and that ultimately starts with knowing what our goals are.

Talk With Your Adult Children

This question might also stem from a situation where you observe your adult children potentially struggling financially.

This can be a delicate subject because you want to respect their independence, but you also want to be there to offer guidance and help them avoid making significant mistakes in the future.

The Bottom Line

Have the conversation with your family. Make sure that you’re bringing it up in a safe environment, and approaching it with an open, non-judgmental attitude. Ensure they understand that your primary concern is their well-being, and that you are looking out for their safety and security.

Financial missteps are common—we’ve all faced them. It’s important that you learn from those errors and embark on a more positive path moving forward.
