Podcast Episode 406: What Happens in the Money Map Retirement Review

What happens after your first meeting with a financial advisor? We’re looking inside meeting number two in our retirement planning process, which we like to call the “Money Map Retirement Review.”

After learning your goals and gathering details in the Discovery Meeting, the Money Map Review is where our team presents their findings: a clear, customized, one-page summary of your financial picture. You’ll see what’s working, what needs adjustment, and how your assets align with your retirement goals.

In the latest episode of the Money Wisdom podcast, Jake Doser, CFP®, CPWA® and Nicholas J. Colantuono, CFP®, discuss how we approach this and what you can expect when you sit down with us.

What to Do Between Meetings One and Two

After the first meeting, we take time to thoroughly review everything you’ve shared with us, while also doing our own behind-the-scenes analysis as a team. We may follow up with requests for additional details, like clearer expense numbers, missing statements, or tax information, to ensure we’re working with accurate data.

This collaborative “homework” phase sets the foundation for our second meeting, where we present our findings and begin offering guidance tailored to your unique circumstances.

What Is the Money Map Retirement Review?

When you return for the second meeting, there’s a sense of ease and familiarity, allowing us to build on the trust we’ve started to establish. We begin by reviewing notes from our initial conversation to ensure we understand your goals correctly, then we walk you through your custom, one-page Money Map.

Though simple in appearance, it’s backed by detailed analysis and team discussion, highlighting your assets, income streams, and any areas for improvement. From there, we offer personalized insights and recommendations.

Three Key Areas We Analyze

In this second meeting, we focus on three key areas: risk, income, and the details of your portfolio. We assess how much risk you’re currently taking and whether it aligns with your financial goals. We then evaluate your income strategy to see if your current plan can support your desired retirement lifestyle and compare it to our recommendations for a clearer path forward. All of this is distilled into your Money Map, which helps guide a focused, actionable conversation.

It’s About More Than Just the Numbers

This meeting goes beyond numbers and strategy – it’s about helping you navigate the transition from your working years into retirement. We’re not here to judge past decisions, but to ask the important question: Is your money positioned to work for you in this next phase of life? That’s the heart of our work leading up to and during this second meeting.
