No matter what you’re passionate about, reaching an elite level demands discipline, resilience, and growth. For Alex Karaban, those qualities helped shape his journey to becoming a two-time NCAA national champion.

In this episode of Money Wisdom, Joel Johnson, CFP® is joined by UConn’s Alex Karaban to discuss his upbringing, work ethic, and focused mindset as he prepares for the 2026 NBA Draft.

Upholding Strong Values

Karaban’s parents immigrated from Eastern Europe with no money, limited English, and the challenge of rebuilding their lives. They instilled in him the values of hard work, determination, and never taking shortcuts. Those principles became the foundation for everything he’s accomplished since, both on and off the court.

Learning Through Pressure

After helping lead UConn to back-to-back national championships, Karaban became the veteran leader everyone looked to. But the pressure grew heavy on his shoulders, leading to a lack of confidence. That adversity became one of the most important turning points of his career.

By his senior year, Karaban learned how to separate performance from identity. Whether he was making shots or missing them, he stayed the same leader and teammate. Instead of letting his losses define him, he focused on preparation, confidence, and staying present.

The Mindset Behind Greatness

Karaban emphasizes the importance of living in the moment. While many athletes focus on future goals, he believes looking too far ahead can distract from the work needed today. That mindset helped him navigate the pressure of high expectations while preparing for the NBA.

He also credits head coach Dan Hurley for shaping his growth as a leader. Hurley’s demanding culture requires toughness, accountability, and complete commitment to the team. But according to Karaban, what makes great leadership most effective is trust.

Defining Legacy

For Karaban, greatness means more than statistics or trophies. Greatness is about growth through adversity, embracing responsibility, and using his platform to better the lives of others. To him, his legacy is more reflected in his involvement in nonprofit work and his desire to help communities through basketball.

Twenty years from now, Karaban hopes people remember more than just the championships. He hopes they remember someone who stayed true to his values, led with humility, and made those around him better.
