What Lifestyle Changes Should I Consider to Maintain Good Health in Retirement?

Have your question answered on the Money Wisdom Question Series!

Today’s question is: What types of lifestyle changes should I be considering to maintain good health in retirement?

Many of you have spent your entire lives working and you’ve also perhaps raised a family. Now, you’re at a point in your life where you’re getting close to retirement or you are retired, and you want to ensure that you’re able to live the lifestyle you want and live a long, healthy life.

First Things First

Developing a routine in retirement entails a number of things. First and foremost, it’s your health. So, it’s diet, considering what you eat, if certain foods raise blood pressure or cholesterol, and things like that. That being said, it’s important to continue to see your doctor for any scheduled visits that you have and also keep your diet in mind. Ask your physician for the name of a nutritionist that they work with. You’d be amazed at how much you can learn by sitting down with someone and having that conversation.

Exercising in Retirement

Consistent exercise doesn’t mean you need to work out seven days at a gym. It could be as simple as taking a walk every day with your spouse or loved one. Or maybe you do want to join a gym, or prefer something like hiking. Whatever you decide, keep doing the things that keep you active and busy.

Create a Bucket List

Make sure you keep a bucket list of all the things that you’ve always wanted to do but could never do before. What does that mean? Taking a cruise, traveling, visiting relatives across the country, or just getting away for the weekend with your family or your grandkids. All of that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Volunteering and Part-Time Work

For most people, retirement can be difficult. Some people would like to continue working but with less stress. You may consider working two or three days a week, just to keep busy and earn a little extra money for those vacations or to help fund your grandchild’s 529 plan.

Volunteer work also is very rewarding and very fulfilling for some people and it helps the community out tremendously.

Keep Moving

Keep busy, keep a routine, and keep a bucket list of all the things you want to do while you’re healthy. Take advantage of those while you can, it’s important.
