How Do I Know If My Financial Advisor is Doing a Good Job?

Have your question answered on the Money Wisdom Question Series!

There’s plenty of discussion and debate around today’s question: “How can I tell if my financial advisor is doing a good job?” Instead of relying on preconceived notions, we believe the best way to answer it is through an objective, principle-based approach.

In this week’s Money Wisdom Question Series, Jake Doser, CFP®, CPWA® shares three essential pillars that any advisor should meet in their client interactions.

1. There Is Clear and Ongoing Communication

The communication between you and your advisor is one of the most important markers of a strong relationship. Conversations should not only be clear and straightforward but also frequent enough to keep up with changes in your life.

That said, there’s such a thing as too much communication. When you have a solid financial plan in place, you shouldn’t need constant reassurance. A good financial advisor isn’t a day trader, reacting to every market move. Their role is to help you keep up with the market or play defense against market loss, not to try to outpace it.

At Johnson Brunetti, most clients meet with us once a year to review account performance, discuss market developments, and keep that two-way communication open. If tax planning is involved, we’ll likely meet twice. Outside of those formal reviews, we’re also available by phone or email.

2. Any Changes Made Are Intentional

There’s a difference between making changes with purpose and making changes for the sake of activity. Some advisors feel pressure to adjust portfolios just to appear busy or keep clients engaged. But any change to your financial plan should be intentional and meaningful — driven by your stage of life, your goals, how you use your money, or relevant shifts in the market.

3. You Have an Understandable Plan

Last but certainly not least, a good advisor will help you build a clear, actionable financial plan centered around your goals. For most of our clients, that means planning for retirement. Once your goals are clearly defined, we select investments that support the plan. We don’t chase returns or make decisions based solely on comfort with risk. In fact, you may sometimes need more or less risk than you’re comfortable with or used to.

When you’re ready to take the next step, a trusted advisor can help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
