What’s the Biggest Challenge Retirees Will Face?
Have your question answered on the Money Wisdom Question Series!
Over the next decade, retirees will face many challenges, but the biggest one may not be financial. While markets, inflation, healthcare, and taxes are all important, Joel Johnson, CFP® highlights a different concern in this week’s Money Wisdom Question Series.
In Joel’s view, the greatest challenge for retirees in the next 10 years will be keeping up with technology.
How Technology Has Shaped Our Lives
Think about how much the world has changed in just the last 15 years. Social media exploded and smartphones became a fundamental part of everyday life. Communication, information, banking, healthcare, and even relationships now run through technology.
If you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s, or beyond, technology arrived later in your life. You may now want to dismiss it because you think only younger people need it. Or your focus on retirement may deter you from even trying to keep pace. But those small decisions can quietly pile up.
Why You Shouldn’t Dismiss Technology
The real risk of not joining the digital age isn’t missing the latest app — it’s about feeling disconnected. Today’s technology is how families stay in touch. Your kids and grandkids can share photos, milestones, and everyday moments with you in mere seconds.
Without technology, you may slowly find yourself feeling left out. This isn’t necessarily about needing technology to work or earn a living. Rather it’s about staying connected to the world around you and maintaining your relationships.
How to Use Technology to Your Advantage
Keeping up with technology requires intention, which is sometimes overwhelming. But it’s ultimately worth the effort. Plus, newer tools like voice assistants and artificial intelligence (AI) make it easier to get the help you need.
Staying engaged with technology can help you feel more connected, more confident, and less isolated. As your family grows, moves, and changes, you can stay plugged into what matters most.
